Abstract

Objective: this is an experience report that discusses the impact of electronic waste (E-waste) on health and the environment, highlighting the dangers of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, released during improper disposal and recycling. Studies indicate serious damage to human health, such as neurological changes, respiratory problems, DNA damage and environmental contamination. The obsolescence of electronic devices, with an average useful life of 2 to 3 years, aggravates the problem. Method: in the context of training in Systems Analysis and Development (ADS), the relationship between sustainability and the technology area was discussed in an online and open-access academic forum, addressing the origin, use and disposal of electronic devices. Results: the forum revealed that only 19.73% of participants correlated the topic with their training, highlighting actions such as reuse and recycling. Data from the Brazilian Electrical and Electronic Industry Association (ABIEE) show that Brazil recycles only 3% of its e-waste, despite having 10,000 collection points. The research reinforces the importance of operational protocols for collection and recycling, aiming to reduce environmental and health impacts. Measures such as the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) are essential to mitigate damage and promote the circular economy. These practices help reduce the extraction of raw materials, saving energy and natural resources. Final considerations: it is concluded that raising awareness among professionals and future technology developers about sustainability and the impacts of E-waste is crucial. The integration of sustainable protocols and ethical reflections in the field of ADS strengthens the commitment to the environment and public health, creating a more responsible sector aligned with socio-environmental demands.
