Radiotherapy techniques in prostate cancer: a comparative analysis over 10 years of use

Abstract

Objective: to compare the planning techniques of Three-Dimensional Conformational Radiotherapy (3D-CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) used for the treatment of prostate cancer in men, regardless of age or stage of illness. Method: it is a rapid systematic review. The MEDLINE/PubMed (via NLM) and EMBASE databases were used, considering publications between 2013-2023, using the PICOS strategy to elaborate the key questions. Results: the results indicated that IMRT outperforms 3D-CRT in quality of life, overall survival, local control and toxicity. Based on 8 studies listed in the databases with 1,726 patients, IMRT proved to be more effective than 3D-CRT. When comparing VMAT with IMRT, the study indicated that VMAT is more efficient in reducing dose to adjacent organs. Conclusion: studies suggest that IMRT is more effective than 3D-CRT, while VMAT is more effective than IMRT.
